Glass Rooms & Pods – FAQ

1. Why choose a Glass Room or Glass Pod?

A glass room is a perfect way of being able to enjoy the outdoors all year round, and are ideal for entertaining, or whiling the time away with friends and family.

Unlike a conservatory, a glass room generally won’t require planning permission, and being primarily constructed from glass, it will provide very high levels of natural daylight.

A glass room isn’t meant to be a totally weatherproof product, but it will protect you from the elements, and can be opened up whenever you like to enjoy the great outdoors.

The other major benefit of having a glass room or pod is that it can be dismantled and relocated, should you choose to move house and want to take it with you.

2. What shapes and sizes do they come in?

Within reason, any shape or size you want, as all the products are bespoke made to order. The rooms can be fixed to the property, or can be stand-alone.

The roof can sloped, often called a pent roof, or it can be flat, where the glass is gently sloped to allow for drainage, but is barely visible to the human eye.

The important thing is that the room is securely fixed to the floor, generally to a concrete pad that sits below the patio, and is hidden from view.

3. What accessories are available?

This really depends on what product you ultimately choose. Lighting can be added to the room via LED’s pre-fitted into the aluminium framework, meaning you can enjoy the room late into the night.

To keep the room nice and toasty, energy efficient infra-red wall heaters can be added to keep that winter chill away.

Vertical blinds and roof blinds can be added if you want to keep the area shaded during hot summer days. These can even be motorised.

4. What type of glass do you use?

Once again, this varies depending on the product chosen. However, the key thing is that the glass we install is always a safety glass.

Depending on the product, we use a range of different glass thicknesses. The glass is either toughened glass, which is a process that increases the strength of the glass substantially, or toughened laminated glass, which adds further safety by introducing a special film within the core of the glass.

Toughened laminated glass is generally used for the roof panels, and prevents the glass from falling should it ver get broken. Please bear in mind that this is such a rare occurrence, bit it can happen.

5. Do I need planning permission?

Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer here, as each case has to be considered on its own merits. For example, you may live in a conservation area that may have certain conditions applied. Our advice is that you should always speak to your local Planning Officer, or we can do that on your behalf.

However, in most cases, the answer is generally no. Development laws have been relaxed over recent years, and may of these structures can be installed under ‘permitted development’.

6. How much does a Glass Room or a Glass Pod cost?

This is the most common question when considering a glass room or glass pod, and why not? Like buying anything else, it’s important to know if it is affordable and within budget.
